Over my 52 years of life, and perhaps because of the field in which I work, it appears America is getting dumber. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Okay, now that I've stopped laughing and remarking sarcastically, G.C., I will say this.

Yes. I witness it quite often. Too often, in fact.

What do you attribute it to?

I agree! I believe that a majority of the children are born to idiots! Bad gene pool, drug addition, people with no desire to be anything other than what makes up the scum of the earth. And, if you are born into welfare, you will most likely live on welfare the rest of your life. It seems to be a sense of entitlement -- that society owes it to people who have chosen not to go to school when it's right across the street. If the crack-addict-ho mother doesn't care, why should the children.Occasionally rarely, does a child rise above this. So, the problem perpetuates in multitudes.

Don't get me wrong. Welfare exists for a reason -- to help people get back on their feet, or not fall on their butts when times are hard and unfortunate things happen. But too many people use it as a family planning tool before they can even cover their own asses in this world, forcing society to foot the bill.

Too many TV shows flaunt the ignorant scum of the earth I mentioned, as if is represents a major cross-section of America. So, people around the world who have never been here think Americans are idiots. It's embarrassing to me.

I blame the availability of the welfare system. If people had to be responsible for themselves, I don't think there would be as many stupid people having babies.

I asked a friend of mine from Manchester, England, why there does not seem to be a population problem in England. He said that it is too expensive to raise children these days. He also added, here in the States, a sixteen year old girl can have a baby and the government will set her up with free housing, free medical care, food stamps and child support.

I've met girls who don't want to earn more than $200 per week or they'll "lose their benefits." If they have no education, they will likey only be able to get minimum wage jobs. So, they have figured out that the government offers more than the minimum wage job with the entire public assistance package. So why get up and go to work. Once you sit on your butt for a while, it's hurts to get up. Also, they can drop their kid off with Mom while they go earn unreported income.

Okay. I said it. Now some people may want to kick my butt. But if they do, they are either living in a bubble or benefit from the problem.

Kick your butt?
Hell, you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for that piece of work, Suzy.
Precise, detailed and dead on.

I thought it was because people haven't learned to how to put a cogent thought down in a readable format.

I have my moments of clarity. And during those moments of clarity, my perceptual acuity is really fined tuned, especially in identifying people and what they're all about.

Well Suzy Cruise, while I agree to some of your reasoning regarding the social ills of this country, I don't wholey endorse your position; but that's okay. Psychocruiser hits very closely to what I was alluding. It's not just those on the bottom rung of the socioeconomic ladder that exhibit pure stupidity. I know plenty of wealthy people who can't put a sentence together; spoken or written. In general, our society is just not as smart as it used to be. Look at how poorly our schools are educating children these days; look at what matters to people these days. Look at what people do in their spare time; there isn't a whole lot of enrichment sought in one's limited spare time. There are a number of ills that contribute; I don't have an answer but I sure do see a lot of stupid in people; all types of people...young, old, poor, wealthy...

Montel, Oprah, Katie Couric to name a few more. Political correctness, hate crime legislation and the global warming conspiracy all serve to prove the gullibility and stupidity of some of our citizens, old and young. IMO

And as just a side thought, look through this board. This site attracts people with the means to travel; I doubt there are very many welfare bimbos and crack heads posting here. However, while there are some really good questions asked here, and I don't mean to offend anyone's sensibilities here, but man, there are some really dumb questions asked here, too. And they get answered! Smile Big Grin Lol

On the TV mode, it's not just recent TV that is mind numbing; look at the highly rated shows from the 70s and early 80s; i.e Laverne and Shirley. Sorry to dumb (or dump) on you Wisconsin. How about Three's Company? How about Erkl (sp?).

WOW; my clarity wasn't quite so clear. Let me correctly express my thought:

I thought it was because people haven't learned how to put a cogent thought down in a readable format.
