Since what happened to Dave's family I have taken more notice of it. This guy ran through our turn lane thinking it was a straight through lane recently. Thank God he didn't kill anyone waiting to cross the street!
He hit the side walk curb and barely missed the utility pole. I followed this hole up 17 a few blocks until he stopped to see if he was OK.
What I also find amazing are pedestrians using cell phones. I see them all the time walking along the sidewalk talking on the phone and not even looking when they cross the street.

Dave, I drive the stretch of Highway 72 from I-565 to I-24, at least 6 times a week. That has got to be the worst area in the southeast for cell phone abuse (and I travel through all of it). The area from Paint Rock to Fackler is especially bad. There have been posts on this board about wonderful things to do with cell phones but I am all for suggestions limiting the use of the infernal gadgets. Beepers were great because you could ignore them. Cell phones are the equivalent of microchip implantation.

I know it will never happen, but traffic laws ought to address people doing unsafe things will driving. Cell phones, applying make-up, text messaging, etc. I knew one guy who would plop a book on the steering wheel and read it while driving. Not sure if he is still alive. If he isn't I hope he didn't take anyone with him.
In California, starting July 1, 2008, all cell phones must be hands free while driving. It's a good law, but what's the likelihood of it being enforced?
I believe the best thing to do with one's cell phone is to keep it off until needed.... I am so tired of having conversations disrupted by a non-important call to the person I'm conversing with. My phone is usually off - - but I must confess I have been know to call my husband from the grocery store to see if we need lettuce!

At least it will act as a deterent. Something is better than nothing.
It is not the lettuce call from the grocery store that I find annoying. I do that myself once in awhile. It is the endless loud chatter of non-sense. People act like these things are glued to their ears, or (implanted) as the Doc said.
I know they are not safe when driving, I came within an inch of rear ending someone myself while using one. It scared the &%$* out of me! Thank God I was in my Volvo with 4 wheel disc brakes, instead of one of my older vehicles that don't exactly stop on a dime!
I figure if it is that important of a call that I need to make, I can pull over. Otherwise, I turn it off while driving now.

Originally posted by Sonny V: Now days, almost everyone has a cell phone; at least it seems that way. I use my cell phone for a few other things than just talking. Such as: taking pictures, typing notes in my notepad, checking the time; and using my calendar. We all know about these features, and even more. But what about tricks most people don't know about? I thought it would be neat if we might have have some to share. I'll start with one I found: Using a cell phone to unlock your car when you lock the keys in it. If You have a remote keyless entry, and have a spare at home, you can call someone at home and they can push the unlock button while holding it close to their cell phone, while you're holding your cell phone about a foot away from the door. I WILL unlock the door.
Anyone else have a tip?
Sonny
My favorite thing to do with my cell phone is to shut it off, especially if I'm cruising
