Soccer. Isn't that the game where everyone seems to be constantly running around in circles and a 0-0 score at the end of regulation time is cause for rapturous gasps from the crowd?
We have a couple of Michigan fans at work. I can't wait until Tuesday. Now to work on various ways to weave the word Appalachian into various conversations with those guys...
And here I sit with mixed emotions. My beloved Crimson Tide is creaming Western Carolina, which is good, but I had to pay $29.95 to watch it and the game is boring and I find myself wanting to switch to something else. Why is it that anytime I get a PPV sporting event it ends up being not worth the money? I gave up on professional boxing after the infamous ear biting episode, when I paid around $50 for less than a minute of boxing. And it seems whenever I watch football on PPV it is not worth it.
My favorite team, suspended or not, remains USC. It's my dad's alma mater and my enthusiasm is more for the school because there aren't a lot of dunces there. I attended University of Montevallo which did not have a football team, but they had a killer girls basketball team.
Soccer and track were the only sports I was any good at in school. Soccer is now very popular in Birmingham, but the bigger emphasis is with the schools in the wealthier areas of town.
I don't know how it is these days in the rest of the U.S., but in Alabama the largest group of football fans, the ones that like to wear school sports clothing on a daily basis, never even went to college. Many did not complete high school. Fight On, Trojans!

Dave -- Appalachian...Hillbilly... I like to cut to the chase and just call 'em Rednecks. I'm caucasian and I live in the South so I think it's okay for me to say that.

Suzy comment: There is a lake outside of B'ham called Lake Purdy. For the longest time I thought it was spelled "Pretty," and people just pronounced it "purdy".
TrvlPro: I see you got out of them hills. They sure are "purdy" though.

And the Sun rises over the Crimson Tide Kingdom....meanwhile, last night the "battle of Limestone County" held sway as Athens High faced East Limestone High. Athens is the defending state 5A champion. They lost much of their talent to graduation, and it showed as my son's school held on to a 7-6 victory over the crestfallen Golden Eagles of Athens.
digdmr -- it looks like you're my only ally on the Trojans. Well, at least I have an ally. I was in elementary school when my dad got his degree in Cinema (film directing) there. It was a fascinating school in the 60's and probably even better now that the WATS riots have stopped and the spoiled rich kids don't protest as much as they did then.
BTW, OJ Simpson was in my dad's Literature class, OJ showed up for the first class and the last class, none inbetween...he was there on track scholarship.

Google shows it as just an "athletic" scholarship, although he was on the track team as well as the football team. In fact he was part of a world record 400 meter relay team in college.
