Hi Stuart- I'm currently researching this trip on 01/14/07. It sounds terrific. We just came off the Sapphire Princess from Mexico, & loved it! We sailed on the Dawn Princess to Alaska in 2002, & loved it.

I've done Princess out of San Francisco to Mexico in October and the Mercury out of San Diego in January. The Mercury isn't as large as the Princess ship, and I liked the excursions better. However, the Mercury is an older ship and looks it. The beds were pretty bad on the Mercury, and we had the owner's suites on both ships. I liked the food on Princess better. Some of the staff on both ships weren't that friendly. Princess had more bars and music. The entertainment on Mercury was random. The Princess ship had better pool areas. Princess takes care of the tips and Celebrity does partially. Princess has washers and dryers which is good if you do dirty excursions like we did. The Mercury has no washing facilities. We had a hot tub on the Mercury balcony so I put our jeans in that and turned on the jets. I liked some things on both ships and didn't like some things on both ships. I liked everything on the Crystal ship.

Hi Stuart. My mother is on the Dawn on her way to Cabo this morning. She tells me the rooms are very tiny but clean. She has an inside cabin on the Dolphin deck-sharing with her travel agent friend. My sister and I are going with her on this same cruise in April and will have a balcony on the Aloha deck. Mom saw this one and says it is also very small. A tight squeeze. Not what she is used on the other Princess cruise ships. She says the food is good and having a good time.

An update on the room size on the Dawn. Mom decided the three of us would be too cramped in the Aloha Balcony so she was able to move us to the Baja Mini Suite. Should be much better.

We are looking at this cruise for next year. I was surprised to see it talked about already. I have been on the Dawn before but not this destination. My husband wants to scuba dive and we thought this cruise would give him lots of opportunities. Would love to hear any suggestions for the ports of call.

My wife and I did the Dawn Princess trip this past April and although I was very pleased with the ship and the food the weather was such that I'm not sure I would do it again from SF. The 1st day into Catalina was great. However; after that the weather was very chilly until we arrived in Puerta Vallarta. While in Mexico (Puerta Vallarta, Mazatlan & Cabo San Lucas) the weather was GREAT.Once we left Mexico (Cabo San Lucas) and until we arrived in San Diego and then back to San Francisco the weather was quite chilly again. I don't believe I would cruise out of San Francisco again. I would prefer leaving out of San Diego.

Celebrity is a good choice as I have been on two of their ships and enjoyed them very much...I do believe they are a little more upscale compared to Princess. As for the weather, San Diego is definitely where I would depart if I were going back to the Mexican Riviera.Hope you have a great time.
