I think he will be ok wearing dress pants, jacket and tie. You will see a wide variety of dress. I believe on Princess you will see more people dressed very formal in tuxedos and long gowns. But you will still see some dressed in suits and cocktail dresses. I think you will be ok.

I agree with Cruise Fanatic that the outfit you describe will be fine for the formal nights. Do note that jeans are not permitted in the dining rooms in the evenings -- even on so-called "casual nights" -- so be prepared with a couple of pair of khakis or something similar. Enjoy your first cruise!

Although jeans are frowned upon I've gotten away with them on many occasions. They appear to be more like the Dockers & don't really have the typical blue-jean appearance. I also change ASAP into my jeans every night after diner. You would be surprised how many guys do likewise. I also haven't worn a tie for many years on Princess & not a word has been said- most times I remove my jacket to give to my wife as she's always cold & again nothing has ever been said.
