Help I am heading off on my first cruise on Sunday to Alaska. While in my great effort to pack I am realizing I don't know what I am doing. I know to bring warm clothes and dress in layers. But are blue jeans offensive dress for around the ship? Does the rooms have built in blow dryers, or pack your own. Does anyone have some sudgestions for me?

Blue jeans are not offensive outside of the dining room. In fact, you will be fine in the dining room during the day (breakfast or lunch). The rooms have blow dryers. There have been many posts from people bring their own, however, I have waist length hair and have no trouble drying my hair with the ones provided. Saves weight and room in my luggage. Relax, bring plenty of smiles, bring your camera with extra memory cards, batteries, and/or film. You are correct to bring layers, including some lighter weight clothing, it can get very warm in Alaska during the summer. Take a deep breath and remember, you're going to have a wonderful experience. Soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner are provided. Towels are provided. If you forget something, it's ok, you can get most anything on board or in port. Don't forget any medication you may take. If you wear contacts or glasses, bring an extra set, in case. Don't forget your sunglasses, you might want to pack some field glasses as well. Have a wonderful cruise!

We went to Alaska 2 years ago and YES, jeans are the norm for everywhere and everytime except at dinner in the regular dining rooms. Even in the Horizon Court you will see jeans. We had weather from 35 dgrees to 70, and some days on the excursions a parka was just the ticket. Because there were 3 of us in a room, one of the best things we brought was an over-the-door shoe organizer. With gloves, hats, umbrellas, medicines, evening purses, etc, the many pockets were invaluable, and kept the bathroom neat. My makeup was kept an a roll up travel thing that hooks on the robe hook. This thing is so great I now take it on all trips. ($12 at WalMart). I hid an iron on board, but with Princess, that was silly, because of 2 things: it's Alaska and who is going to notice wrinkles, and the laundry room on the floor has everything you need. If you may want to do a load of jeans midweek, bring quarters.
You will have a great time, and go whale watching in Juneau. Unbelievable!
