Hello everyone. It has been a year since our last trip and post to Hawaii. We are traveling on the Diamond Princess in August to Alaska on the Heart of Alaska cruisetour. We will be traveling northbound and fly home from Fairbanks.

There are so many port excursions to chose from I am looking for some recommendations and the definite don't do outings. I have checked out prior postings, but would appreciate any thoughts and recommendations. Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage.

Thank you

Irvine Traveler

Hello Irvine Traveler. What sort of excursions interest you or don't interest you? For instance, we are going to Alaska this summer, as well (different ship), and you will not find me anywhere near a floatplane excursion, although they come highly recommended. Will you be using tours through Princess, or on your own?

LisaP,

I agree no float plane. We normally use the Princess excursions, however I have been reading post by others that have used local outfitters with great success.

Our main interest is to see the local area, countryside, in each port. I am also considering a salmon fishing experience and perhaps whale watching (if it is the season, I am still checking that out). We were wondering about the walk on a glacier tour and a local train ride. No dog sled rides for us.

I would suggest the White Pass Railroad in Skagway and Juneau for your whale watching; Ketchikan would probably be best for salmon fishing. All can be booked independently on the internet and you need not worry about getting back to the ship in time; believe me, it is in their best interest to get you back--their livelihood depends on it. One name that comes up a lot for whale watching is Capt. Marvin; just Google him.

Hope this helps a little. By the way, Hi neighbor!

Rick,

I just knew you would be there with information for me. I will get on google this morning and pursue your recommendations. I know we did very well in Hawaii with the local tours.

Thank you for responding.

Steve
