Does anyone know if the main pool on this ship has a retractable roof? Every other ship we have sailed has this. Since we are leaving from NY, it may be a little chilly the first day so this would be a good thing. Thanks! Marguerite
It does have a retractable roof & it does help when the weather is cool but on our Hawaiian cruise the doors keep opening & cooling off the place so it didn't feel that warm on the lower level. The upper level was great to sit & lay back with sun shinning in during the afternoon.
We sailed on the Carribbean Princess in Jan. 2007 and all the pools where open, no retractable roof. The main pool has the MUTS, so it could not have a roof.

You're right Rainbird. I had that ship confused with the Diamond. I've been on to many ships to often & they're all beginning to become a blur.
You can always jump into a hot tub. Of course, after a couple of rum punches, maybe it won't seem so cold I don't think winter is going to leave us alone until June this year. I'm tired of wearing my long johns. Only a couple more weeks to go and hopefully I'll be warm. I'll check to make sure about the roof. I'll be on the Caribbean Princess May 1st.
I would have thought that Alabama would be warmer this time of year. Out temps here in Florida have been warm to say the least & we had to use the AC in our bedroom 2 nights ago. Our pool (unheated) is around 83 or 84 degrees & we'll probably be swimming in a few weeks. I've got to invest in that solar heating system this year.
If there was a rectractable roof, it was very well hidden. I definitely did not see one. The hot tubs were great. The water at Princess Cays was a little nippy. I didn't bring my wet suit, so it was too cold for me to go in. I did walk up and down the beach. The sun was nice and warm, so maybe by the time you get there, the water will be too.
No Penny, you are correct; no retractable roof on Caribbean, Crown, Emerald or Ruby Princess. They are on the Grand Class, Sapphire and Diamond, and Island and Coral.

I just read this morning that the Caribbean Princess is going to get the Sanctuary and the Crown Grill on her in January when she goes into dry dock. I looked at the menu in the Sterling Steak House, they didn't have the Black and Blue onion soup. That was in the Crown Grill on the Emerald. So maybe she'll have it the next time I sail her.
Penny, So, you must tell me all about it since I will be on the caribbean Princess in 11 days!!! As I said before I have been counting from 372 days ago!!!!!! I cannot stand to wait another minute!! It has been very cold in Connecticut, still in the 30's in the mornings. I hope it warms up soon so I don't have to wear my winter woolies on the cruise! Marguerite
We'll all I can say is that it's been warm here in SW Florida- we've started to use our pool and we don't heat it. I'm sure it's at least as warm if not warmer in the Caribbean.
Marguerite, unfortunately it was only a 3 day to Princess Cays and back. I can tell you they are working feverishly to get her in tip top shape. There was some tile that they were replacing around one of the pool areas. I saw them replacing some of the carpeting as well. I heard from others on board that she was supposed to have been in wet dock instead of doing the 3 and 4 day itineraries before she went up north. I don't know if it was true or not. I do know they were working around the clock on her. She was immaculate, as usual. The casino was tight, but fun. It was the only place you smelled smoke. She is going into dry dock next year and they are going to move the casino. I'm hoping they will put it in a more open area so it can air out better.
This was an unusual cruise for the staff and crew. They seemed a little disjointed, but that should be resolved for your itinerary. I don't think they were ready for the short itineraries and this was the first of their tournament cruises. The casino host was having some trouble figuring out how to run the tournaments. Again, this should NOT be a problem on your cruise.
The food in the buffet was excellent. I ate breakfast and lunch up there. They had themed lunches in the Cafe Caribe (deck 15). The food in the dining room, was not normal Princess fare. Again, I think this had a lot to do with the short itinerary. Our formal night did not have crab or lobster on the menu. I selected Anytime Dining, met some great people on board. There were a lot of people there for the tournaments and the casino was packed. (This won't be the case on your cruise). I lost count of the pool areas, I think there were 4 or 5. There was a children's pool area, a video arcade, the golf links, internet cafe, wireless access (with instructions in your cabin on how to connect), library, photo gallery, art auction, 2 decks of shops, some great clubs, the skywalker lounge, the spa, salon, and fitness center. I did take pictures, but not enough to get developed. I didn't take the digital because that camera doesn't like me. She looked a lot like the Emerald. I was on the Riviera deck (14) in an inside cabin. This was my first experience with an inside on Princess. It was configured for 4, with 2 pull down beds. A huge closet, a nice vanity, blow dryer, tv, refrigerator, safe, 2 night stands, 4 drawers in the vanity/dresser. There were 4 shelves in the closet where the safe was, and shelving on top of the wall length closet. Normal small but functional head (bathroom). The tender, embarkation and debarkation processes were the best I've had on any ship. I was on and in my cabin in less than 10 minutes. I was on the tender in less than 5 minutes. I debarked in less than 5 minutes (I did the walk off since I only had 1 bag). I got to the port around 3, there were no lines at all. We didn't sail until 7 that evening. I was on probably the 4th tender to Princess Cays. I no sooner got to the debarkation lounge, they called for us to leave. Princess has the best muster drill as well. You go to a lounge with your life jacket in hand, you listen to the instructions over their closed circuit tv, don your life jacket when instructed, take off your life jacket, return it to your room, and voila you're through.
It was nice and warm in Ft. Lauderdale and in Princess Cays. The water in Princess Cays was a little nippy, but compared to New York, it'll be just fine. If I had brought my wet suit, I would have gone swimming. I did walk up and down the beach and did get wet. Thankfully, we had plenty of sunshine.
I think she's heading up that way next week, so your cruise is about to depart. It will be over before you know it. If you're planning to cruise again, take advantage of booking on board. The deposit is $100/pp and you get an on board credit with the amount depending on the length of your cruise. There is a coupon book in your cabin for alcohol, jewelry, and spa items and they will run specials during your cruise. Read your Patter daily.
Hi Penny, Thanks for the info! I was disappointed she didnt't go into dry dock as planned, but, we shall manage!! We have a mini suite.when we went o Alaska on HAL, we were upgraded to the suite and are now spoiled!! This will be a long week, I am too excited to work! Plan on working a half day Thursday & I took Friday off. Anyway, thanks for the info. Marg
