Carnival Corporation announced fuel surcharge increases for Princess Cruises.
For bookings made on or after April 21, the daily fuel surcharge for the first and second passengers in a cabin will increase from $5 to $7 per person. This charge is not to exceed $98 per person per voyage.
Also, they are starting to charge third, fourth, and fifth passengers in the cabin at the rate of $2 per person, per day, not to exceed $28 per person per voyage.
Bookings made between November 7, 2007 and April 20, 2008 will retain the original $5 fuel surcharge for the first and second passengers.
This applies to all of the cruise lines under the Carnival umbrella.
Well the new fuel charges have gone into effect on Carnival, HAL, Princess, NCL and others. NCL is getting out of hand with theirs. They're not just on pax 1 & 2 but on every passenger and theirs was already $7. per day when everyone else was at $5. for the first two. Now they're going up another $2. across the board. Hopefully crude will quit climbing at some point and these increases will stop climbing with them. With the taxes escalating, the fuel costs rising, parking getting pricier and everything else like airfare to the pier the cost of the cruise is becoming insignificant in the overall cost of a cruise vacation.
But with all that said, I'm not seeing fewer bookings. The industry continues to grow.
Neil, I'd rather see them add surcharges than up the rates totally. I know taxes and fees are going up and that's part of the total price, but it's still a good value. I pray I'll be able to continue cruising, it is such an awesome experience! Who knows, maybe they will be able to turn water into fuel some day.

To be fair, NCL did not assess the surcharges to previous bookings, which many other lines did at the time. Of course, most of them have been rescinded since then, but there was a huge outcry at the time.
Also, NCL's increased fuel supplement is not in effect -- there's still 9 days to go
