We just got back for a very nice Grand Princess cruise. Only one problem. The "Lobster Night" dinner had been changed from my other cruises with Princess. One lobster and two shrimp. Anyone know when and why the change? We were really bumbed out, to top it off the lobster was really bad. Other than that a great trip and we can't wait to go again. Thanks for your help.
We went on the Emerald last November, they had lobster one night. I prefer the Alaska King Crab, but I know my hubby ordered it. He also had lobster in Sabatinis and in the Crown Grill. Maybe they're reducing cost? Although with the way prices are going up, lobster is becoming more affordable than beef.
caseyg55, do you mean you were only given one lobster tail and two shrimp? Did you ask for more? Not that you would if it wasn't good. Did you order something else?
Usually they give you two tails to start--and then keep it coming until you say, "please, no more!"

We also were on the Grand in Jan & saw the same thing with the two LARGE shrimp. I thought the lobster was great & the shrimp were delicious. I suppose it's just a change from the normal routine they've been doing for years. The waiter we had offered to bring as many more tails as we wanted but my wife & I both refused.
Another note- we also attended the "most traveled passenger" party in Skywalkers lounge which was held on another evening after diner with about 10 other couples & they put out a spread of food which wasn't touched at all as all the couples had just eaten. They had the same size shrimp (cold) hanging from an ice bowl. I wish I could have gone to the affair being hungry. What a waste. I suppose the officers must have eaten good that evening.
We were on the Grand in October and they did bring out one lobster tail and the shrimp, but they did ask if we wanted more lobster. I find that all of their meals have smaller portions than years ago. It cuts down considerably on the waste since there used to be more food than most people could eat. And there is the option of asking for more if you want it.
Do the Dawn in December, it was also a very small lobster tail (tasty though) and two shrimp. But for our table that was just the tip of the iceberg. We asked if we could have a a lot more at once, and they brought us a huge platter of extra tails.
Thanks to all for the replies. No we didn't ask for additional meals. As I said the ones we got just were not that good. Maybe we just ran up against some bad lobester. We cruise Alaska in May on Princess and will be sure to ask another helping.
They did have what they called a Sea Food Extravaganza....1/4 of a small lobster tail, shrimp, claims and mussels....but it was VERY GOOD...but still no lobster tail...

I just read a review on the Emerald Princess & it was said that in the Crown Grill (Specialty restaurant) there was an additional charge of $9 each for the lobster. I'm not a fan of the extra charge restaurants so this charge might have been there all along but I thought that once you paid for the "Specialty" restaurant all but the drinks & tip were included. It might be a sign of some additional changes yet to come on Princess.
We had dinner in Sabatini's and the Bayou Cafe (same as Crown Grill) on Island Princess; my wife had the lobster and there was no additional charge--so this is new; and most unwelcome.

I'm not surprised there have been a few cuts with Princess. They're having some trouble filling a few ships and the rates have dropped dramatically. I just booked a client on Dawn for 7 day in Mar 30th. The total for the cabin for two with tax and fuel sur-chgs in was under $1000. for an inside cabin all the up at Cat J on Aloha Deck. That's not the kind of rates you usually see for this time of year on Princess.
Hi Everyone. We went on Costa Concordia--Mediterranean Cruise last month. One night my other half was speaking to the Maitre D and asked when is the lobster night. He explained that there will be no lobster night they will have very large prawns instead, well the Very Large Shrimp was very small once you took the head off, so my other half called the Maitre D over and told him, they're soft and horrible. After showing him the little mushy shrimp, the Maitre D said the Chef must have been looking through magnifying glasses when he purchased them, we were also told there would be no escargot because of board of health reasons. The ship is beautiful, the food a majority of the time was good, but the service WAS TERRIBLE. Most of the people in our group (40 of us) didn't even get coffee after dinner. We spoke to half of the people in our tour group and they said they wouldn't ever go on that ship again. Sandy P

That's interesting to know about Costa. It was the same thing on the Costa Riviera some years back although they did have lobster tails. It was our one & only Costa cruise. btw- how was the smoke situation on the Concordia? I can guess it was pretty smoky seeing that you were in the Mediterranean & most Europeans do smoke quite a bit.
