Hi We are cruising on the Island Princess in feb. Is the water from the tap in your cabin safe to drink? Is it different from the water you can get at the buffet? Thanks

It is perfectly safe to drink. The ships being built today have their own purification system.

The ships all have water purification systems.
I would think the water is the same. They do supply you with bottled water in your cabin (at a fee) if you chose to use it. |

Of course Princess would like to make you believe the bottled water is better so they can sell you some. We've been drinking their purified water for years & it's always tasted fine.

The water from the faucet in your cabin is the same water used by the various chefs and cooks aboard a ship to prepare your meals and wash your dishes. It is perfectly safe. I made drinking water for years in the U.S. Navy, distilling seawater and purifying it into potable water. People seem to think if water is put in a pretty bottle it "must" be better. This isn't really true. I always ask for ship's water in the dining room, and use it to take my meds in the cabin. Don't worry about it. Dave  |

Thank You all for your responses. I used to carry some water on with me to drink in the cabin. Now I have more room for wine.

I've always drunk ships water, save my money for something more exciting than water!!! To me it tastes just fine. I usually start the cruise with a bottle, then fill it up and chill it in the fridge for shore excursions. That's the only thing--tap water is never cold, at best lukewarm. They have ice for you, you can get it at bars, dining areas, buffet or room service.

Tap water is OK, but I like to use the bucket of ice to drink or fill my bottle because it is refreshingly cold all the time as it melts. I ask for 2 buckets every evening in my room.

I liked Dave56's response. I have cruised 20 some times on six different lines. They make the ice with the same water you drink and I have used a lot of ice. You can take bottled water on board for a lot less money that they charge. I am still trying to figure out the deal with bottled water. Most of it comes from wells and is no different that the water from the tap.

The water is always good on Princess, I have a bladder disease so I carry one of those Brittas to take out the clorine. Much more reasonable than bottled water. The first cruise I took on Carnival I found the water to be grose!

Bottled water comes from Natural Running Springs which have been ionized....not wells.

Hi,
We were on the Grand this June in the Med. I filled my water bottle with the tap water on the ship. The water had a strong clorine taste to it. It did not make me sick but I drank bottled water after that. |

The water has to be safe otherwise you could not shower or bath in it. Just by washing your face you will get some in your mouth and what would be the sense of washing your hands if the water was contaminated?

If you still are not convinced that the water is safe to drink a trick is to put ice cubes in a glass and use the water from them as the drinking water.

I'd go as far as to say the distilled water on made on the ship is probably cleaner than most city utilities provide. With the cruise industry under the spot light on stomach viruses, I have to believe they take water purification very seriously as EVERYTHING cooked on the ship as well as the ice in all the drinks is made from the ships distilled water source.
But I never did understand the whole "bottled water" thing. People are so water worried, but don't think twice about breathing the much more polluted air we live in... Did you read what I wrote? Maybe I need to be clearer. The room steward replaces the ice in your ice bucket many times a day. These cubes have to be safe to consume because passengers will use them in a drink. Take the cubes, put them in a glass and let them melt. You will now have cool water that is also safe. |

I was just watching the news tonight & noticed that ther're selling pre-packaged water in plastic for making ice cubes- only 10 cents each.

Please tell me you don't really think the ship uses one (water) source for the kitchen, bars and the water coolers scattered around, a different source for plumbing (like your sink and shower) and yet, another totally separate and different source just for making ice? Dave, HELP - this was your area of expertise in the Navy. |
