I'm considering staying in a resort in Oceanside, CA. for two days prior to our cruise on Oct. 4th. I hear that the traffic can get very congested at times and it may take as long a 3 hours to go the 40 miles from Oceanside to San Diego. There will be two couples, and we were planning on taking all the luggage to the pier and checking it with the porters, then driving back to Oceanside to get the other passengers. Has anyone had any experience doing anything like that?

Sonny, I've never done anything exactly like what you are contemplating; but you have heard correctly: the traffic can be horrendous. But that is usually on Friday and Sunday afternoons and holiday weekends. If you start early enough Sunday morning, October 4th, it shouldn't be too bad.

Another option you might consider: check in the rental car in Oceanside and take a Super Shuttle to the pier. It would be very reasonable for only 40 miles, would save one round trip, and lessen the chances of getting tied up in traffic. Also, the resort in Oceanside may even offer a complimentary or reduced fare shuttle.

Thanks, I'll look into the shuttle service - that way I would only have to rent a car for one day instead of two. I'll let you know what I find out.
