I was just looking at the Cozumel Webcam (live) looking at the Punta Longosta Pier and a US Coast Guard boat is docked there. Can Dave or someone tell me if this is a regular procedure or if this occurs frequently? Just curious - I don't know anything about "territorial" waters or even where the US Coast Guard can go. Thanks!

You will frequently see the CG ships in a lot of the ports.

The Coast Guard does routine drug interdiction patrols in the Caribbean and they will pull in to ports for crew liberty and to replenish fuel and stores. Just like any other vessel, they get permission to do so from the local government. The last time we were in St. Maarten a cutter was tied up next to us.
BTW, I've also been on cruises where U.S. Customs and Immigration officers boarded the ship in Cozumel and sailed back to the U.S. with us. Dave  |

Interesting Dave. Did that speed up customs clearance for the ship? I would think if they had agents on board they could have everything checked before you reached port and then give the ship clearance quickly.

Thanks for the education. My son is in the USMC and has some Coast Guard buddies, so I am glad to know they get around...always welcome U.S. military presence, even if they are not wanted. I feel safer!

You will see US military ships in the ports from time to time as well.

Come to think of it I have seen Coast Guard ships at Nassau many times. A large Navy ship was docked at Aruba when we were there.

The navy/CG vessels of the different countries visit each other all the time. Keeping relations between the nations and fun times for the crew

Last year on the Navigator some unfortunate travelers missed the ship in Cozumel. The coast guard brought them out. We did not hear the exact figure, but it was high entertainment to our dining room staff to talk among themselves about what this apparently cost this foursome. I am sure it was worth it--four tickets to the next stop: that was Miami and goodbye to the ship. I'd rather hitch a ride to the departing ship. Wonder what criteria an approaching vessel has to meet to be allowed to disembark passengers to a cruise ship once it is underway!

Sorry...I guess you could not read my parenthetical thought...(I)/(U.S. citizens) always welcome U.S. military presence, even if they are not wanted (by the locals or drug runners/smuglers). I want them there! |
