We want to take our first cruis with our kids and are considering leaving from NY to save airfare. Has anyone done this, how is it? If we left in October would it be too cold?

I wouldn't worry about the weather too much. One never knows what the weather in the North can be in October. It could be cool, but then again they could be having warmer than normal weather. If it is cooler just enjoy doing activies on the ship and within 24hrs you will be in warmer weather.

We've cruised from New York several times and love it. Which cruise line are you considering, as there are a couple of terminals within the city?
