Are there day trips available in Piraeus to go to Athens when we arrive on the cruise ship? Or should we go with one of the tours offered by RCL Legend of the Seas departing Rome on August 29, 2008

We were on the Legend last June and took a 1/2 day excursion to Acropolis and then downtown. If we were to do it again (and we will) it would be a self-tour. Metro is within a block or so of the port. There is a stop near the Acropolis. Plaka and downtown is a walk from there and there is yet another metro stop. If you are fit, you can do it. It was hot in mid-late June and will be in August also.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for, we prefer the more personilized tours that you can get with the non cruise ship companies, I don't like being hurded around with big groups.
