Costa Crociere's "Costa Classica" caught fire off Greece this morning. Fortunately, the flames wer put out fairly quickly, and it appears that nobody was injured. The following pictures show the ship docked in Piraeus, Greece, where it arrived this afternoon:
Thanks, Raoul. Please keep us posted! Looks similar to the fire Ecstasy had a few years ago - same area of the ship anyway. It will be interesting to find out the origin & cause.

Lloyd's CasualtyWeek wrote two weeks ago that according to sources onboard the ship "the fire was due to an electrical fault", but Costa won't confirm anything until the official investigation has released its findings.
I've just disembarked from Costa Classica where I was the ship's doctor from Sept. 11 through Oct. 9. The latest word about the cause of the fire is a cigarette butt thrown by someone overboard and pushed by the wind back into the ship where docking ropes are kept. The first thing that caught fire was actually one of those ropes, and there actually was a strong wind blowing from the back of the ship.
thanks. Actually this is what one of my fellow moderators in our German forum (who is a nautical officer in training) instantly suggested when he first heard about this fire.

Another good reason not to smoke!! Those pictures , combined with the Star Princess event, really show that such a little thing as a cigarette butt can cause TREMENDOUS damage!! Ugh!
I have something to confess. I can prove i was on the ship, but i can;t prove i started the fire... but i did. It was a total mistake. I was on the back smoking a cigarette, flicked it over board, thinking nothing would happen. The wind caught it and took it under into the galley, and caught fire to a rope. Accuse me of lying all you wish, but it won't change the truth.
