I have heard of excessive smoking on COSTA ships to the point where it becomes uncomfortable for non-smokers. Or that the staff is not enforcing their policy on where you are allowed to smoke. I might be oversensitive, but every time i fly into a german airport, you can immediately smell the waft of cold smoke. Yuck.
What are your experiences?

If your itinerary is for Europe you probably will notice more smokers. These itineraries have more Europeans, and they are known for being heavier smokers than Americans. If your itinerary is in the Caribbean you probably won't have as much of a problem.

Maybe it isn't fair to comment about a Costa cruise that took place in 1997 but it left a distinct impression about the smoke situation. It was on the Costa Riveria which I think is still in operation. We took a Mederteriaian cruise that was filled with Italians & Germans who smoked constantly. The ship really had no areas in those days that was reserved for non smokers except for sections of the DR. The smoke was so thick that I gave up on attending most functions. The toga party was basically a smoking party at the bar & it was impossible for my wife & I to stay there for more than a few minutes. I sure things have changed. Eek

I have done some research on this and found that the Costa ships sailing in the Caribbean do not have the smoke problem like in the Med. They do have designated areas where smoking is allowed just like on other ships.

We sailed on the Costa Magica last December. I am a smoker, but am sensitive to stale smoke. There are definitely non-smoking areas, even in the casino. Normally, the casino or bars are where I notice the stale smoke smell, and I didn't get any except in one lounge upstairs. Sorry, I forget the name. Our cabin smelled fine as well (I only smoke on the balcony). We were in the Caribbean, so the med may be a little different. They did enforce the no-smoking areas. Best wishes!

I found on Costa that there is no non smoking areas. I quit only 4 months prior to our trip so found it hard sometimes, but I didnt find it offensive.
