As an aside, just finished watching CNN Headlines news and there was an article about safety and how one family has spent 70,000 suing Royal Carib over the loss of their daughter on an Alaskan Cruise 1.5 ago. RC didb't know she was missing for 3 weeks after the cruise was over, but the Steward did and the Steward's supervisor has been fired.

Thank you for your reply. It's refreshing to read a post that is not dripping in sarcasm. This will be our 7th cruise...so we are not novices....I was just asking a question..being married to a law enforcement professional I am particularly aware of my surroundings and anticipate that many others are as well.

I was hoping to open some dialog as to what if any precautions seasoned cruisers take...as I said we use the door alarm and several other measure ...just like we do at home.

No offense meant, just curious about your question. Personally I have only done three cruises and have (so far) never had a problem of any kind. I am single and have been on the cruises alone. I have never been harassed by anyone. I would feel as safe walking around at 2 AM as 2 PM.

Pinktoes, whenever someone stirs the very essence of our world, we all take different positions. None are right or wrong, just different. I have been in the same situation many times. Personally, I relish people that make such conversations possible because it makes us all think about how we relate to our own realities.

I, for one, hope you choose to continue to post here because your perspective is fresh and stimulating. I know (or at least know by the number of posts that are made here), that everyone in this thread would agree.

I don't know why you feel personally attacked by my posting, as I didn't mean to attack you. Just as I respect your opinion (I was just curious to find our more about your intentions) I hope you will respect mine. Respect and tolerance from all sides are the very essence of this message board.

Okay, you are right, I apologize. I think I am getting sick of people with 1 or 2 posts saying off the wall things. You have a concern- it isn't one of mine, obviously- but that doesn't mean it's not a legitimate one.

I'm not going to bother to explain what my 7 year old was doing walking around the ship alone.

I know that land based resorts can be a little scary- local staff walking around, preying on people, stealing things... but IMHO cruise ship employees are so afraid of losing their jobs that they don't get out of line. Plus- they are corralled below decks and can't beat a hasty retreat, either. The issue of whether other passengers pose a threat to people walking alone is one I guess I should not comment on. The truth lies somewhere between inflammatory news reports and my position.

Fear is not a good travel companion. I am well aware of the hazards to children. I have five and am a lawyer engaged to a cop. IMHO door alarms are over the top and won't exactly add to the feng shui of your stateroom. Walking around alone is one of the reasons I cruise. One thing I hate about newer ships is the proliferation of outside cabins- which prevents strolling around on every deck but the Lido deck. Everything happens inside, near the bars and casinos. Drunken people, who appear festive to other drunken people, might seem threatening to some passengers. It seems like security is everywhere, all the time, but of course that is not possible.
