Regarding other than formal dress dinner nights..... is it permissible for men to wear nice dockers shorts and a polo to dinner? or are no shorts at all allowed or preferred.

I'm sure some male posters will chime in here, dhornick, with their own recommendations. But, may I say that my husband has never worn shorts to the dining room. Or, jeans for that matter.
Khaki dress pants, such as Dockers, are fine.

I believe slacks/pants are preferred.

While I personally feel that shorts are taboo in the dining rooms, you will definitely see many men and children wearing them. Unfortunately, they don't enforce the dress codes on Carnival cruises. Shorts and t-shirts are perfect apparel for the Windjammer buffet.

Depending on the length of the cruise, either formal dress or casual resort wear is required in the Dining Room. The dress requirement for children is the same. For those not wanting to dress up, the Lido restaurants are open nightly (with the exception of the last evening of the cruise), and have a casual dress code. Formal Wear: tuxedo (optional); suit and tie; sport coat, tie and slacks; evening gown; cocktail dress; pantsuit Casual Resort Wear: sport shirts and slacks; dresses; skirts; pantsuit NOTE: Shorts, t-shirts and bathing attire are not permitted in the Dining Room during dinner.

Dockers (the slacks) and polos are fine. Shorts are not allowed in the dining room, but you can always go to the buffet. Have a marvelous cruise!

"Casual night" is Business Casual. Dockers, Polos etc.

The Carnival literature specifically says "no shorts or t-shirts" in the formal dining room at night.

The only exception is the very first night of embarkation because not everyone has their luggage yet. So "the dress restrictions" are lifted for that night.

At breakfast and lunch, shorts are not a problem. Just no swimsuits or cover ups.

Will he be sent away if he shows up in shorts at night ... I have seen the Maitre D do this.
But it does not happen all the time.

Yes, lots of people are disrespectful of the dress code and they get away with it...because Carnival does not enforce their own rules a lot of the time.

After dinner, he can change right back into his shorts for the rest of the evening....no problem.

My intent was to wear a sports coat, tie and slacks (Dockers) for formal night. I don't own a tuxedo,and think it is no more formal to wear a business suit than to wear a sports coat. Plus a sports coat and dockers can look very nice.

Welcome to cruise chat, Solo1959.
You will see a wide array of men's apparel. Don't stress about it. You will be fine in what you are planning to wear. I used to wear tuxedos on every cruise. Now, I don't even bother bringing one. Relax and have a great time.

I have seen people in shorts. It depends on the ship and how close they enforce the dress code. Personally I would not wear shorts it the dinning room.
