In terms of sound proof cabins. It is best to choose your cabin carefully. I have been on 3 different ships. On the Grand Princess, Carnival Triumph and RCCL Explorer of the Seas.

I never experienced any noise coming from the cabins on either side of my cabin, HOWEVER, we did experience noise on from the floor above us. In one case there was the CASINO above us, and we could hear an annoying sound - the dinging of the slot machines. The second cabin we had on the Explorer of the Seas, we were on the floor above the clubs (dance clubs, etc.) so we could hear music til 4 am in the morning. Not real loud but again annoying. When we were on the Princess ship we had booked a cabin on an insulated floor - what I mean by that is a cabin on a floor where above and below there is no entertainment. This is how you achieve soundproofness. Also, my brother's cabin was right above the engines and he could hear that rumble. Also be careful not to book a cabin above the galley because you can hear the clang clang bang bang of the food preparation activities. All day and all night long. Also make sure your cabin is away from the stairs and elevators - another source of noise. Hope this helps. Now, there is one noise you will not be able to escape as is most hotels, you will hear the flushing of toilets from above you or sometimes below you and also when people take showers above or below you. That is just the way it is.

That does help alot Pink. It sounds like you have narrowed it down to the captains room to have peace and quiet... Wink I'm on vacation and I know how to vacation, but it just seemed that since the rooms are so close together, top, side by side, and bottom that you have to hear alot. But annoying is what we get on every vacation sometimes. We all live on the planet together, and I'm sure I've annoyed people too and didn't realize.
Thanks again for your help.

Just try and stay towards the middle of the ship and 2 floors away from the major areas and you should be fine... ThumbUp

As a light sleeper I want to add my 2 cents worth, bring ear plugs. I have had to use them twice because our room was close to the engine room. Ron slept like a baby but I wouldn't of been able to sleep at all if I did not have the ear plugs. (This is a lesson I learned the hard way too -- got an upgrade to an outside Cabin by the Bridge.)

Location of your room is important. I cannot be by an elevator because the noise of the elevator landing at the floor and people waiting for it, usually talking/laughting loudly keeps me awake. (Especially at 2 a.m.) When booking a cabin I like to be three cabins from the elevator and stairs.

I prefer the inside rooms becaused they are quieter and darker, but was upgraded to an outside cabin with a Tender Boat close by. Every day we went to port via Tender the noise of lowering the Tender woke me up.

What is above you and below you are really important. My neighbors was on a cruise where their cabin was below the "disco" -- their cabin was so noisy they couldn't get to sleep until after the disco closed. They complained and was given a lot of free drinks -- but got no sleep.

Our favorite cabin was below the Beauty Shop. So there was no noise at night from them.

If you are a light sleeper there are a lot of noises that could bother you, so pack the earplugs and get a good nights sleep.

18 Cruises down and going on Royal Caribean in January 2007.

We heard some laughter as people walked down the hall-if they were really loud. And we heard people going OOOOH and AHHHH outside when we passed a huge number of dolphins. Other than that-nothing.

Is it just me, or does anyone else actually like the noises from the ship?

I mean, if I stay at a hotel after the cruise I miss the announcements and the elevator sound it makes. Of course I have never had a cabin beside it.

I know I have said this before, but I get so slap out tired trying to get up early, and stay up late to do everything. Then when I get to bed the sea is rocking me like a baby Smile

The answer to this is easy ...just drink enough and you wont hear a sound..

Im with IslandCruz on this one I love the noises and the anouncements heard thru the door in the hallway ,,even tho I cant understand what they are saying. It's all part of the ambence (sp) of the whole cruise expierence.
Just my 3 cents Smile

I always take ear plugs. I usually don't get back to the cabin until 2AM (and I am very quiet walking down the hallways and closing my door).

You can get noisy neighbors, but sometimes it gets to be funny. On this cruise we just got off, there were 4 young bucks across the hall that apparently had just had their first beer as they embarked. They came down hooting and hollering as they found their cabin. And I am thinking "oh great..we have a bunch of yahoos" back here. But that was the last we heard of them. Apparently, their candle had a very short wick! One limped in ahead of me back to the cabin one night. Seems he had almost killed himself on a ATV in Cozumel. Now that was not the funny part, but he was really quiet the rest of the cruise.

I am the same, I don't usually go back till the casino closes around 2 AM. I try to be quiet though.

But I had a happen-stance a few cruises back. I had met the casino host on another cruise, I was playing quarter slots and not doing well the first few days. I finally hit a little and the host sent a shot of Greygoose to me. Well I only drink beer and am not use to that. I kept one full bucket of quarters to play with. Well by the time I got to my cabin it was getting heavy and I was feeling the Greygoose. When I went to get my card out to open the door it was in the other pocket and.. Yes, I dropped the whole bucket of quarters! They went everywhere and made a big boom.

The next morning a knock on the door, it was the neighbor with quarters in her hand "I believe these are yours" and she was not smiling. I tried to apologize, but she was not too receptive. I felt terrible as was an accident. I look back now and it is a little funny Smile

Sorry so long, just thought was interesting how things happen sometimes.

That is all too funny Lol

Heck, I thought I picked them all up. I think some went under Her door. She wasn't mean just not in a laffing way about it. I did appreciate the honesty and told her so.

Mr. O, you would have kept them because you would have thought you dropped them Smile

On our cruise this past Sept on the Rhapsody, our room was on the 8th level, across from the elevators, directly below the main pool area. After reading about the noise factor, we were a bit worried. But never heard a sound (and I'm a light sleeper). You could open the door and hear music in the atrium, but as soon as the door was shut, not a sound. The only noise that bothered us was the people in the next cabin. They liked to sit out on their balcony late at night and early in the morning, talking rather loudly. We wanted to sleep with our balcony door open, but that made it impossible, so we just shut our door and the problem was solved.

Where was that Grinch's sense of humor? She should have been happy just to be ON A CRUISE. Best place in the world. Ah, your quarter experience sounds funny and like a good time was had from here!

Well. You were all very right. We have never slept so well, and maybe, MAYBE we heard a conversation or two as they went past our door, but we were never disturbed. We loved the gentle hum of the boat, and the rocking to make us sleep better. AAAHHHHH I can feel it now. Man I miss cruising!! I am so hooked.
A funny thing about the elevators on Ecstasy. Their "chime" when the door opens is hilarious. It sounds like a dying moose sitting on a sick beaver who is lying on a pregnant rat....lol....anyway thats how all of us on the last day on the ship discribed it. It was great. I miss it....crazy I know, but I do.
As far as the quarter thing goes, how funny. You made a memory. It didn't have to be a good one.....
My friends call that my motto. When my husband and I first married 25 years ago, an old man in the grocery store told me when he saw I was fussing at my husband about something, to just fill your life with memories. They don't have to be good ones, because at the end of your life thats all you have. So...my motto has always been that. "Make a memory, it doesn't have to be a good one." The ones that you think are the worst ones you ever had, somehow are the ones you laugh about later the most.
So cruise on and drop more quarters I say. Thanks for the chuckle.
