off of the carnival holiday, last night. 50 yr old lady...unbelieveable. you dont just fall off a cruise ship. it takes some effort on the falling person part.
I hope it turns out well for the lady tho.

That does it - - I'm not going on a Carnival boat. They're too dangerous. I certainly don't want to fall overboard.

No one falls off a cruise ship. You either have to jump and be thrown off or be doing something really stupid. I do hope the best for the lady.

Holiday is one of the more difficult ships from which to find a place to do something stupid or suicidal. No open promenade, the pool deck is pretty well enclosed with very small windows. The fantail, the small decks outside the buffet, and certain areas above the main pool are it.

thats 2 in 2 days!! can we hear a third.. i just can't believe these people are that stupid. like the guy yesterday said he was just trying to see another ship and stretch too far,then splash!!

susanmaz - The problem of a person going overboard is not relegated to only one cruise line! As long as men and women have put to sea people have gone overboard for one reason or another.

One needs only to read the Coast Guard reports to become aware of the frequency of occurrence. Know this - So long as people at sea will throw caution to the winds and fail to excercise reasonable caution near a rail we shall hear of these unfortunate incidents.

Fortunately, nearly all of our fellow cruisers excecise reasonable caution.So long as we continue to do so - one need not fear a cruise on any seaworthy ship!

I think the media is to blame for the perception that you can "fall off a cruise ship". most reports start off with
Passenger of XX cruise ship fell overboard today.
the dont tell the whole truth. they either helped them self go over board or the people they were with helped them go overboard.

Right. People who have never cruised get the impression from media reports that someone was laying in a lounge chair and suddenly got tossed over the side.

I have yet to read or hear a media report on these events which says you really have to make a conscious effort to go overboard.

I like to believe I'm smart enough to stay away from leaning too far over and/or sitting on a rail - but we'll be doing our first balcony in November... I'll have to remember to "stay safe".

I hope the woman get's rescued, and my thoughts are with her family and friends.

I don't see how the government would be able to regulate people climbing over balcony or deck railings. Unless, they required them to be higher or something. I doubt that would prevent some people from trying to look over or doing things they shouldn't though.

It's 7:24AM Central time right now. CBS Early Morning Show is about to have a segment on the Holiday and the three people that have disappeared in the last week. Well, right there is irresponsible reporting because the guy the other day didn't disappear!

but this is a situation that can even happen on a building balcony or in land
How can this happen?
Everytime I read news like this the person was drunk JUST in a few little cases is other situation but still is the persons foult,
so what are we going to do if we let the lawyers get in the action they are going to ruin everything for us...

Modern cruiseships have extended camera systems taping everything that goes on- especially monitoring the external areas and outboard sides of the ship. Presently privacy within the stateroom is honored! These lawsuits may change even that!

If somebody has been thrown overboard it is likely to be caught on some camera, if not-it will be extremely difficult to prove. If it can't be proved that a crewmember is the cause-how can the cruiseline be held responsible??

Hopefully, the attorney in question will be taking a cruise!!!

Cas, and timc, I sure pray lawyers don't get involved. As one of my favorite commedians once said "you can't fix stupid". I hope the "news" report shows that it is impossible to simply fall overboard, unless "YOU" are doing something you shouldn't be doing. I think there were 8 people that went overboard last year. When you take into consideration how many people are on cruise ships on any given day, you're going to find a reason for someone to go overboard. To "fall", a person would have to be sitting, walking, or climbing on the railing. The only other reason would be in some one wanted to end it all for themselves or someone else. There's no way could just stumble and fall off a cruise ship unless you're 8 foot tall and the railing is below your waistline.

the lawyers that believe that people get thrown overboard instead of jumping or being pushed due to some stupid act dont need to be lawyers.
I have only heard of one person and that was the newly wed fella that was supposely thrown overboard 3 days after his wedding. but even that sounded suspicious to me( I thought it was an elaborate Con to collect money). I mean come on what newly wed bride is passed out drunk on the wrong hallway while her hubby is being beaten up and thrown overboard. just sounds fishy.
so bring the lawyers on. I believe we have enough experts on this board alone to dispute what a lawyer can say about falling off of a ship or being thrown off of a ship

It always amazes me when I hear about passengers falling off cruise ship. Falling off takes a lot of effort. First, unless you are 7 feet tall, it would mean climbing onto the rail of your balcony. Or standing on a chair and climbing over the rail. Some balconies have slots that are open - you could lose your shoes or other articles but not yourself. Somethimes the wind up on the high decks can be brutally strong and normally the captain will inform people to take serious care on high decks when wind is a problem. The wind could propel a guest sideways or frontwards but that would mean crashing into the rails not going over them. What if a person has taken prescription meds for pain of some sort and becomes dizzy at night on the balcony as they admire the waves down below. However, one would have to lean over to a very large degree to actually fall. What about people who sleep walk? A person who sleep walks not always knows what they are doing and could possibly do this in their sleep. These things keep me from cruising in a balcony cabin with my kids. Only insides for them.
