We will be going on Victory in April, Just found out my wife will need to check into her parctice now and again, will her blackberry cell phone {Nextel} work ? if not any suggestions? Thanks
Cellphone only work were there can be cell towers (I know, I design the cell towers for a living). SO, out in the ocean, no, the blackberry won't work. UNLESS, Carnival has installed cell phone repeaters on their ships (I tought someone in this forum had mentioned they were planning it). If they did, then the phone would work as it does on land. You would have to call Carnival and ask. But be aware that even if they did install them, the charges could be high. Can she keep in touch via email? Or instant messaging? If so, she could go to the internet cafe, pay for a block of minutes and use their computers.
The other option is to wait unitl to get to your ports, but Nextel may not have service in your ports. (Grand Caymen may have service.)
Then, the most expensive way is to use your cabin phone for ship to shore call. Very expensive, but if she HAS to call in, that would be an option.

I do not know what the charges are could be easier
I am assuming all Carnival ships are the same on internet cafe charges. . . .The charge 75 cents per minute plus a one-time $3.95 set-up fee. You can get package deals., . ..The one I remember was 100 minutes for $55.
Re: Blackberries. . . We just got off the Valor, and our friend had his with him. He used it in ports. I thought, although i won't swear by it, that it worked on the ship, too, at times, depending on where we were.

Nobody I know brings their cell phones with them when they venture out of their rooms at night. They just don't work. Sometimes if your sailing parallel to land you can pick up a signal but that only happened once. Wait until you get to port. I have a Verizon Blackberry and that has never worked outside of the US.
Just got off the Miracle on Sunday, Oct 29, 2006. My blackberry had constant signal throughout the cruise. I didn't use the phone, strictly email. I'm not sure what the cost will be but the connection during data transmission is brief. I will post back when I see the bill.
