Carnival Corp. announced that it must once again raise the fuel surcharge assessed to each passenger. The surcharge is increasing from $7 to $9 per person, per day for the first and second person in each stateroom, capped at $126 per person per voyage. The surcharge for additional passengers in each stateroom is going from $2 to $4 per person, per day, capped at $56 per voyage.

This increased surcharge takes effect on all bookings made on or after June 12, 2008. For existing bookings made between April 11 and June 11, the surcharge remains $7 per person, per day for first and second, and $2 per person per day for additional passengers.

This new policy applies to all of the cruise lines under Carnival Corporation, including Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa, Cunard, Holland America, Princess and Seabourn.

I did notice a few days ago that RCCL was at $9, CCL could not be far behind. On the bright side I just filled my gas tank and for the first time in months I paid the same as last week. Maybe fuel price is stabilizing. Smile

I sure hope so, CruiseDad. With the auto industry and airlines cutting jobs and equipment, I don't want to see that happen to the cruise industry.

I don't have any problem with fuel surcharges as long as I know about them when I book my cruise. If they attach them after the fact, then I get upset. These large ships only get 19 feet per gallon of fuel so fuel is a huge expense for them.

Once your cruise has a deposit on it, they won't increase your fuel surcharges. The increase only applies to cruises booked on or after the date stated in the announcement.

Yeah, after the fiasco earlier this year they stopped doing that.

NCL is also upping their fuel surcharges. A whopping $11. per person per day for primary pax and $5. pp per day on 3rd and 4th pax. First time the fuel surcharges have surpassed the gratuity amount in cost for a cruise. The average per day cost of a cruise keeps climbing. Now with airlines cutting routes and increasing costs it's very nice to live near a port!

A typical cruise ship has about a 250,000 gallon fuel tank.
