I am in the same boat. I love cruising but I think the most I can afford is balcony. I kind of thought about a suite but I feel like the extra money can best be spent elsewhere such as flights or excursions.

We had a extended balcony. It was not a mini suite but the balcony was a little larger. The room was large enough for us. I will post some pictures if I can find them. Had to change computers because of a crash so I hope they are still there.
Originally posted by Jim C.: upon seeing it, my cheap wife who thought you only needed an interior room because "you are only in the room to change and sleep" stated "next" time we book a suite. (you get a balcony with that suite too)
Be careful about booking a suite. On some cruise lines it does not automatically mean that it has a balcony.
I hear that stuff all the time about only needing a place to sleep and it does not only apply to cruises. You will spend more time in the room than you think. It is nice to go on the balcony at night lay back, have a drink and look at the stars. See ships off in the distant, see islands, etc. Sunsets, sunrises, flying fish, etc. Sure you can see this stuff from the public areas but can you do it in just a robe, or having to fight other people for the space? We were on a top deck one night. Laying on lounge chairs. No one else around. Then another couple came up. Seen us by a rail and thought their was something to look at, walked over and stood in front of us. There was a whole deck and we were the only 4 passengers there. They had to stand in front of us.
In the morning having room service, and dining on the balcony. Sitting there in the ports and watching the activities. Watching the ship pull into and away from the dock. Spend the extra and your vacation will be way more enjoyable than looking at 4 walls "because you are not in the room that much".
7thson Thanks for your input. It seems like the penthouse is the way to go. I don't think I will be able to afford a penthouse on my next cruise so I guess I should enjoy this one. I checked about the suite having a balcony and it does so, a call to my TA is my next step. This is a surprise trip for my wife (25th anniv) and I want to do it right. Thanks again.
I want to do a penthouse suite on a cruise. At this point it is a little out of my price range so I am sticking with a balcony. I want to do a Hawaiin cruise or something of that sort for my 25th anniversary. Then I am definitely splurging for a penthouse.

I like it more than the Glory because there is a deck above pool level that you can walk all the way around the ship and on the glory you needed to go down a level and then back up.
Bdog, I am going to try this again. I posted on the Glory site by mistake. Anyway, we will be sailing on the Spirit April 15th as well. My hubby, cousin and his wife will be with me. We have been posting on Cruise Critic as well, under the Hot Leis and Lava Tour'07. I will look for your reply here, but come join the gang on CC as well. EVACruiser
My wife and I had the penthouse suite for our 20th. It was terrific. Been on the Spirit twice 7/2004 Alaska cat 11 10/2005 Hawaii cat 12 Well worth the extra.
