Is there any truth to it being worse on the bottom level (as far as motion)? I am a first time cruiser and just looked at the website and found my room. I am at the very bottom! I will be on the Elation.

A lot would depend on how rough the seas are. I have been in a low cabin and did not feel very much motion as compared to the higher ones.
The Elation does not have mid level cabins. The regular cabins only go as high as deck 4. There are suites on deck 8. When is your cruise on the Elation? I just returned from a cruise on the Elation and I was in M152 and we did not feel any movement from the ship. The only night it was rough was returning from Cozmel and my son got very sea sick. Make sure and take the patches and you will be fine.

While you'll be on the lowest passenger deck, be assured that it is not the lowest deck of the ship. Generally, it is pretty stable on the lower decks, moreso toward the center of the deck. We've stayed on the lowest passenger deck on several ships. One advantage is that you get first dibs on the elevators.

The lower decks are better if you're sensitive to motion. Think of the cruise ship as an inverted pyramid, with the point in the water and the broad part above. The point in the water gets very little motion, while the broad upper part swings back and forth. Same is true of a ship.

Cat20, the more towards midships and the lower the deck, the smaller the motion generally is. Also, while you might be on the lowest passenger deck, there are usually at least two or three decks below that, including the engine room deck. Best regards, Raoul Fiebig |

What great information everyone has given. I feel much better now. I will be cruising on the Elation May 28th going to Eastern Carribean. Since it's my first cruise, I am worrying about everything!

Cat, after going on your first cruise, you'll be an expert! Try not to worry; one of the big attractions of a cruise is that it's a worry-free vacation! You don't have to worry where you'll eat dinner every night, or what there is to do during the day or at night...etc etc. You'll see! Your one big "worry" will be which ship to cruise on next time.
