What safety precautions do you take on the ship?

We never leave anything out of value. We have a portable door alarm that we take with us...and use And we never go around alone.....

A portable door alarm sounds very cool. How does it work and what does it cost? Where do you get one?

Why would you not go around the ship alone?

Like Larry I can´t understand why you would not go around alone.
A ship is such a safe place. What do you think, could happen to you.
I often walk around alone, while my husband is taking a nap and never felt uncomfortable.

If you need an escort maybe you can ask one of the ten year olds walking confidently about the ship- with the blessing of their parents. Seriously- Camp Carnival lets ten year olds sign in and out on their own all day and night. That is a pretty good indication of the level of risk that walking around a cruise ship presents.

We just take the usual precautions. Lock the door when we retire for the night. Put the passports and cash in the safe. Don't get liquored up to the point that you could fall and hurt yourself.

I'd be more concerned for my safety at a typical hotel or on a city street than I would on a cruise ship.

I got a portable door alarm many years ago as a free promotional gift. I played with it around the house and found it to be quite buggy. It would go off sporadically, and sometimes wouldn't alarm if the door opened. Of course, I imagine they have better models on the market these days.

I know! It's like: hello? Oh you mean, never go alone in my bathing suit with a drink in my hand, passkey between my teeth, completely oblivious to anyone and everything? Never go alone... for a walk? Never go alone? How else am I supposed to go find my 7 year old who walks around alone all the time?

Pinktoes, security on ships is extremely effective and I suspect that one is probably safer on a cruise ship traveling alone than just about anywhere. However there are people that feel insecure about being alone, so it would be understandable that somneone could. However, if one were looking for the most secure environment as a single traveler, he or she would have to look long and hard to find a more secure venue.

The recent press about missing passengers makes great headlines, but based on the millions of passengers who enjoy cruises each year it is a nominal percentage that I would speculate is much lower than any other vacation type or the population in general.

Pinktoes, just before and take precautions for what you feel is necessary for you and your comfort level. That is all.
As an aside, just finished watching CNN Headlines news and there was an article about safety and how one family has spent 70,000 suing Royal Carib over the loss of their daughter on an Alaskan Cruise 1.5 ago. RC didb't know she was missing for 3 weeks after the cruise was over, but the Steward did and the Steward's supervisor has been fired.
Again just be wise to your situation and your own comfort level.

hi I jus wanted to let u know I was not making fun of you about worrying about being alone, I've done 6 cruises and can never find a place to be alone, even in my cabin as I travel with companions and they are in and out of cabin all day long, I even tried to be alone on cruise port days by staying behind to enjoy the peace and quiet, but low and behold so did a handfull of others I thought I would have the lido deck to myself pool hot tub buffet etc. but no there were others, so I was never alone enjoy your cruise and hope you have a grand vacation.

I should have clarified this to be 'late at night.' We took our niece on a cruise with us for her college graduation. Coming back to the room one evening after spending time in the Disco...she was followed by 2 young men....they caught up to her and kind of backed her against the wall...telling her to come to their cabin for a drink and they could have some 'fun'...one young man reached out and took he arm..at which time she floored him...4 years of self defense courses in college...the other young man ran like a crazed fool....she held the young man down until other guests came along in about 5 minutes...(our cabin was aft so there wasn't a lot of traffic and they were in the area where they couldn't be seen by people coming down the halls) ......security was called and as it turned out these 2 young men had been harrassing young women on the cruise. We shiver to think what could have happned has she not be able to protect herself. that is the reason for my word of caution.

I do not obviously consider cruise ships to be dangerous....but I don't go walking alone in my home town late at night either.

I see that making a less that perfect statement about cruising is frowned upon....especially by an administrator? sorry I thought this was a message board....
