i heard a blurb on cnn that according to cruise line reports 23 people have gone missing between 2003-2005, they claim that is a small percentage overall, but more than one is too many for me...they never seem to talk much about thier mistakes.
Well it is a great place to get rid of someone and have a decent chance of getting away with it. or for that matter doing yourself in. just as the Grand canyon is there are more "accident's" at the grand canyon than there is on cruise ships. I just hope (in this politicly correct world we are becoming) they don't start building a safty fence around the Grand Canyon or safty nets around the cruise ships.
"Hey Margret Just Back up A little so I can get you in the Picture better"
i'm sorry ..not their mistake...unless it was slick deck to someone they served too many drinks..but i notice you only see one small mention of most cruise incidents, usually at 3am on cnn but things like running into sandbars, (heard about here) or rougue waves (princess was nailed), or steering malfunction (the carribean princess, i believe, was sailing full out when it suddenly went sideways) it got a little more airtime because of some passenger-shot video which by some ships contracts would be unairable. I wonder how much the cruise companies pay the media to keep the "love boat" image intack. I got a touch of conspiricy theory on that post HEH HEH

Princess was nailed by a rougue wave? You mean NCL Dawn in May 2005? The courts just threw that class action suit out of court. The cruise line was cleared of any wrong doing. It was the Crown Princess that listed in August, yes, that was determined to be human error (an over correction). The media blew that one out of proportion with their interviews of finding the most hysterical inexperienced cruiser, as if she was on the Titantic, or Poseidon. The ship didn't list even close to what most reports were saying. The cruise lines pay the media??? Hardly!! It's just the opposite. Whenever, anything in the cruise industry happens the media blows it clear out of proportion making it sound much worse than it ever is. The Norwalk virus is a good example.
I agree they found the worst witness to talk about it...its like after the tornado they have got to stick a microphone in the face of the biggest redneck in the trailer park. The wave i was talking about had damage footage shown on tv with broken out windows on some very high decks, they claimed only a few staterooms were damaged but it looked a lot worse, it was early 2006 like jan, feb, march?? and i swore it was princess, but i could be wrong...like i said it was just a small story barely mentioned, but lord help you if your standing on deck when a 40-50 footer slams a ship.
Not trying to be funny about someone missing. But if a 50 ft. wave hit on some of the new ships with low riding Balconies. I want not want to be on the bottom with my door "Bungee'd" open taking a nap.
You guys know I loved my cruise, and would go again in a New York sceond. BUT, I can see how somone could fall the heck off that balcony attached to our cabin and we won't even talk about the uppermost decks edge! We stood WAY BACK on the balcony when we went out at night to see the stars, which were stunning by the way. I demanded that the girls not go out there at night otherwise. Let's face it, you fall the heck off there at night that's all she wrote. Those balcony railings could be a bit higher, but I suppose some idiot would just climb up on something to look over.
Originally posted by Jerome: what is height of the balcony railings this will be our first suite, i love to go out and look at the stars but my wife does not want me near the edge
Not to worry, you would have to "climb" over if you wanted off the ship that way.

Over a 10 year period, 64 people (I counted 8 "rescued people") have gone missing while on a cruise. Not all of these are confirmed as people falling of a ship. I imagine some could have gone missing while in port. Of those 39, the site attributes 17 to suicide or possible suicide. The remaining 47 are labelled as "fell over board or unknown" and I am curious as to how many of those were reported as "fell over-board" by the families because they did not want to have them seen as suicides (for insurance reasons or otherwise)
So ignoring the suicides (which in my book you can't fault the cruise lines for because desperate people do desperate things...) worst case you have 47 people in a 10 year period that went missing on cruise. How many people die or go missing on other types of vacations? Heck, Disney World alone probably has as many per year. The only difference is that some people want to point a finger at cruises and think that there should never be a death on a cruise. Which is complete hogwash. The cruises just get more attention.

I was shocked by the amount of suicides and crew. But I guess I should not have been. It would be pretty hard to just "fall" off. I have not been one to fault the cruise lines. People fall off hotel balconies here, sometimes is drunk spring breakers goofing off. As you said you can't control what people do on purpose.
sometimes the sea at night is mesmerizing. I look over the rail and have the feeling of just wanting to jump in to the white foaming water, as the ship cruises quietly into the night. just to feel it. anyone else get this feeling?
I just wonder if some people actually just take it all the way...it's a scary thought but it is a true feeling I have when looking over the Railing at night.
another good reason they dont play the Van Halen song "jump" on these ships...i noticed the carnival triumph played a lot of Eric Clapton...seemed like he was on every time i got in an elevator...which is fine with me.
Hope you don't do that after slamming your Bud Lights! If you want to be in the foaming water, come up to Myrtle and I will have them tow you on a float behind the casino boat at night with a life jacket on
My scary thought when I have a balcony is I will be dreaming some weird stuff, wake up and find my self out there..is weird thoughts we have sometimes.
If you are being serious and really have those thoughts you should talk to someone. You are sorta scaring me.
