I have heard that it is not safe to be out and about unless you are on an organized tour. Is this true?

Our tour guide warned us about that.

I did see a few police around with automatic weapons.

We walked around Costa Rica, Port Quetzal, Guatemala took a taxi tour to Antigua, people took taxi around Cartegena ...no problems
A lot of countries the police carry large guns just be aware of your surroundings and if you are unsure then stick to the ship's tours

Puerto Limon in Costa Rica seemed fine to me, I did not have any problems when I was there.

I spoke with a friend from there before going and she warned me to be careful if I went (alone) very far from the immediate area around where the ship docks.

Hi Larry in Miami. Having been to Costa rica before and we were wanting to get some more of their coffee. Are there shops or a supermarket close to the pier?
