We will be taking a cruise in July 08. We will visit Nassau on day 2 of our cruise. I saw a suggestion someplace to order sandwiches from room service to take off the ship in a cooler to save money on food - it's apparently very expensive in Nassau/Paradise Island, but that some ports may or may not allow food to be brought off the ship. Anyone know if Nassau port will allow this? Thanks.

Hi huskylms2007, Welcome to Cruise-Chat!

I have never had anything searched or inspected while debarking a ship in Nassau. I don't know if it is against their laws though to bring a sandwich off the ship. I know I am not carrying one around and trying to keep it cool so it doesn't spoil. Smile

Hi huskylms2007, welcome to Cruise-Chat. Instead of worrying or hasseling with lugging stuff around, just head back to the ship for lunch. You can come and go as often as you please, without any problems. If you're going over to Paradise Island, it's not that far. You can catch cabs over and back with little trouble, and the cab fare is not that expensive. We very rarely eat a full meal on any of the islands we visit. We'll eat before we leave the ship and if we get really hungry grab a small snack or go back to the ship and eat. I don't think Nassau is any more pricey than Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. Best wishes for a wonderful cruise and once again, welcome aboard!

There are plenty of reasonably priced places to eat if you want to do that. Our usual method is to have a good breakfast and we usually come back to the ship earlier than most others. This gives us some precious quiet time on a mostly empty ship, and we get something from the buffet or pizza stand on the ship.

We had a long debate about bringing food off the ship a while back. In the end we decided that it is usually not lawful, except for pre-packaged food like potato chips. Fruit is a definite no-no. Sandwiches? I initially liked the idea but then changed my mind after a vigorous argument from Lyn in Canada (LHT28).

Thanks for your replies. We don't mind lugging "extra stuff" around. We will be traveling with our 4 kids, one of whom is in a wheelchair, one in a stroller, and will have a diaper bag. Haven't made up our minds yet about food, just trying to explore all options. Thanks for your helpful replies. Wink

The first time we went to Nassau was our first ever cruise port so we had no idea what to expect. I wasn't too keen at eating food off the ship or where we would find it. So we did what others said with a twist. We ate a good breakfast and it was our formal night so we came back early anyway ( ihate when cruises do that ) But having small kids myself I brought a small beach bag with a towel, sunscreen, camera etc and a few nonpersihable snacks. Cashews, gummy bears, caprisuns, etc. It turned out well because after a short tour we stayed on the beach, munched on our snacks and had a light snack before dinner. Worked fine. One time we took a box or two of fruit loops from breakfast as a snack for our littlest one.
