Hi Raoul, I read your comment on Millennium re-engining, but while on board a couple of weeks ago a crew member said that the gas turbine main engines were being replaced by diesels. I asked him how this project could be completed in a mere three weeks, but he insisted that was the case. Can you confirm that the work is limited to a diesel auxiliary installation?

Heron they are only planning on using the diesel for auxliary (to provide electricity, aircon etc) but not for the engine factor. So this move will not cure the "pod illness"

Still I think it will not be good for the M Class since I cannot see them being able to muffle the noise and the addtional vibration caused by a diesel - they just were not built for that. I just hope it won't totally ruin the M class since they are my favourite ship at the moment

Danke Moewe. That is a lovely "handle." Actually I didn't see diesel main engine conversion as a cure for "sick Mermaids" -- that cure seems to lie with R-R and KaMeWa. But a Holland America captain had told me that the gas turbines are not very economical and I guessed that Celebrity might be replacing them for that reason.

You are right about the M-Class; they are quite vibration-free and stable. The accommodations, cuisine and care on board are superb. We did BA-Cape Horn - Valparaiso onInfinity in 05 and just did western Med-Transatlantic on Millennium.

I can confirm what moeve wrote already. The "Millennium" will be fitted with one Wärtsilä diesel engine for use as a hotel department generator only.

A total of eight engines have been ordered with Wärtsilä - one for each "Millennium"- and "Radiance"-class ship.

The HAL Capt is right since the gas turbines run on Kerosin. (this is however far more expensive than diesel BUT & I wish the cruiselines wouldn't always ignore this part Kerosin is also much cleaner than diesel. This in my eyes is just as important to concider since cruiseships also emit into our atmosphere.)
