We are thinking taking a cruise, however we are definitely levi attire people. We understand the dinner thing but what about day to day attire?

Daily wear is casual. Depending on where you are sailing, you will be comfortable in jeans or shorts during the day. Since you posted in the Celebrity column, I assume you are planning a Celebrity cruise. You may find other cruise lines perhaps a bit less dressy, but in any case, your comfy clothes should be fine for daytime. Smile

Thats depends on the itinerary. For warm weather, shorts and t-shirts. For colder weather, jeans and sweatshirt, so during the day the attire is casual.
But I´ve you go to have breakfast and lunch in the dining room, don´t wear shirts and tanktops.
And in the Selfservice Restaurant its not allowed to come in bathingsuits.

So, really simple.

I just got off Galaxy by Celebrity. Way too formal for us. If you want more relaxed atmosphere go with Royal Caribbean. There were 3 formal nights and we don't do them. Buffet not open for dinner...casual folks had to make reservations for dinner unless they wanted pizza or hamburgers. Wouldn't do it again.

Don't forgett, Celebrity is a Premium Cruiseline. That's why we like it.

I heard it was a Premium cruiseline but just didn't quite see it. Ship in need of repair, art work around ship lousy (many complained)..movie unwatchable in theater because out of focus and sound muffled. Service...room great....but so was service on other cruiselines. Way too much "enrichment" seminars although did enjoy Dick Underwood from NASA. We did not think "napkin folding" is worthy of being on the daily agenda. Food good but desserts not so good. Not comp[aining...treated very well but don't see that much different from other cruiselines.

Forget about levi's with celebrity. Can't enter dining room evening with levi's. Lots of levi's on ship though.

Do most of the men wear tuxedos on formal nights? My husband and son usually do, but because of some family issues that are taking up a lot of our time right now, we probably won't be able to make it to the tuxedo shop to rent one for our son. My guess is that I don't need to be concerned, but just checking. Thx!

You will see those wearing tuxedos, but a nice suit will work just fine.

Don't worry about renting a tux....we saw a man with a bolo tie and sport jacket. You can still get into dinner. These formal nights are money makers for the cruiseships...they take all those pictures and try to sell them!!

Thank you... I was pretty sure they'd be OK in nice suits. We haven't been on Celebrity in 10 years, but I recall they were pretty formal, which was one of the reasons we booked this cruise.

We'd rather go with the tuxedos, but it may not happen this time due to circumstances beyond our control. As long as they don't stand out, we're OK with it. Then again, when we were on HAL two years ago -- supposedly another premium line -- they both wore tuxedos and were in the minority.

Lisa, I haven't seen tuxedos in the majority for many years on mass market and even premium cruise lines. Not until you get to Cunard/Silversea/Seabourn would anyone notice if the men are in suits instead of tuxedos.

I saw some tuxedos in november on the transatlantic crossing with the Splendour and suprisingly also a dress coat (swallowtail).
Maybe they wear more evening gowns and tuxedos on a crossing. Never saw so many beautiful evening dresses, compared to our other cruises. Very tasteful, not too much, not too old-fashioned like on the Zenith.
And people loved, like me, to dress up for dinner on formal nights.

As a follow-up --- I am back from our Infinity cruise and saw very few tuxedos on the formal nights. Nearly every gentleman was wearing a suit and most ladies wore long dresses. I also noticed that on the non-formal nights, pax dressed nicely, at least business casual-like. Pax also dressed for the evening, not just for dinner.

Thank you all for your advice. BTW, this was a 7-night Caribbean cruise, so I'd expect more tuxedos on longer cruises or crossings.

Lisa, You are correct that the longer cruises have more people in tuxes. We are back from a 14 day RT LA-Hawaii and there were quite a few men in formal wear. We noticed this also when we had done a Hawaiian 11 day cruise in 2002. The 7 day cruises just aren't that formal.

My DH and the other 3 men in our group rented their tuxes from cruiselineformalwear.com and it was very easy to do. Do it online or over the phone and it was waiting for him in our cabin when we arrived. This was the first time he had worn a tux since our wedding 37 yrs ago! I have to admit he looked quite fine in it. Sure helped with the weight in the luggage not having to drag a suit along too.

We just came back from a 14 night Panama Canal cruise on Summit and were in main dining sitting. At least two thirds of all the men in our sitting were in Tuxs, with almost all the rest in suits and the odd maverick in a nice shirt and bow tie or other tie combination. Informal nights had most men wearing a sports jacket or blazer but most did not wear a tie. Casual nights were smart casual, definitely no jeans. Celebrity is a Premium cruise line and certainly more formal than Holland America and Princess in keeping with its Eupean style dinner service. Just count all those pieces of cutlery at each dinner setting!
