The car rental locations at both ports is at the airport, but numerous car rental agencies offer free shuttle service from the pier. I would suggest you pre-book your rentals, however. It is usually much cheaper AND depending on how many other tourists are on the island, there may be no available vehicles for rent if you wait until you arrive. Nancy

I don't know that it's cheaper to book ahead, but it might be easier to ensure you get the kind of vehicle you want. I'd recommend booking ahead; make sure to tell them you are on a cruise, instead of arriving by air.

hello,
Absolutely book ahead and make sure that you join several of the frequent rental programs such as Avis Wizard, Hertz #1 club, and the others from National, Alamo and so on. This will probably save you some money and more importantly some time. Also, have your reservation in hand when you reach the car rental counter.
Renting a car is the very best way to see Hawaii's many fascinating sites.
Have a great trip,
Fred
