We have never cruised before and are going on the 11 day western caribbean on March 11/07. How is the weather in New York and is the ocean very rough that time of year?
It can be really cold here in NYC in March, possibly even snowing. I haven't sailed out of the NY yet but I hear it's quite rough heading out of the NY port during the winter months.
its usually a little rough for the first night.. then after that, usually smooth sailing nothing to worry about! and the first night, you magnify everything on the ship.. so just know that it isnt THAT bad!

Winds cause most rough seas. It can be windy anytime and anywhere in the world. Likewise, the wind and seas can be calm anytime and anywhere in the world. Although the odds can change.
New York cruises are often longer cruises. The longer the cruise, the odds of having one rough seas day increases proportionally.
Weather systems during the winter months move faster. Therefore on a typical week long cruise, the chances you will be sailing through a cold front increases.
So, pack your favorite anti-seasickness measures. After all, you will eventually sail in rough seas, if not this time, you're next.
