Hi Shelby, The forecasts change from that far out as you know. I am not an airport ice expert, but unless it is a storm, I think they keep the runways clear. So hopefully all will be fine. That should make for some interesting clothes changes throughout the day.
Are you referring to Greensboro, NC ?

Yes, GSO , and I apologize Dave- I just don't seem to ever get this posting thing quite right.
My concern was with ice for take off as well as the fact that I drove down through Fancy Gap at 6 am and I have concerns that the mountain will be dangerous even with a little ice. I believe you are correct , howver, that with the forecast that far out it is sure to change. Thank you for your help.

You know Dave, this is probably on the worng board anyway. It is more transportation oriented. Just go ahead and remove it altogether if you would. Thank you.

Hi Shelby, I have driven that same mountain many times. I most certainly understand your concerns. It was so foggy one time I had to go really slow with my hazard lights on. It is really smart to keep up with the weather like you are doing. That way you can allow extra time to get over it. If you don't mind me asking, where are you from?
Best wishes,
Dwayne

Shelby, I live about 2 hrs. from greensboro. I checked the weather for sunday and there is no rain or snow in the forecast for greensboro.High that day will be 49. Hope this helps.
I live in the southern tip of WV. The weather channel has changed a little since I first looked. Now it just says rain/no ice, but over night it is still to be around 32 in NC. I worried b/c at 5 amm the mountain may not be treated yet esp if it is black ice.

I know that area well. I grew up on the Va. side near there. If you can get through the tunnels and to the peak without ice, it should be better temperature wise on the way down. We went up to my uncle's for Christmas once in Bluefield and everything was fine south of the mountain. When we went through the last tunnel and came out it was snow and ice!
The most important thing is to be safe. If you see it is going to get bad don't do it. You might consider going a day early during the warmer times for the mountain.
I found this site. I don't know how accurate it is.

Well they are continuing to change the forecast- but for the worse. They are calling for sleet and ice here all day Saturday, snow Saturday night. We decided I would drive down before dark Saturday but found out the boy going with us won't be able to leave until at least 8 pm. I don't know that driving down at that late hour would be any better. hubby doesn't seem to see the concern. I know it is a major highway and I know i have 4 wheel drive and brand new tires. But I am a wimp.

I guess I am a wimp too. I don't like driving on busy interstate highways, on flat land when it is raining. I would be concerned too about driving over one of the highest mountains in the eastern US when they are calling for sleet/ice/snow!
I hope and pray the weather forecast improves for you. Do you have any options for changing from GSO to another airport to avoid the mountain?

I'm not sure if Charleston would work. The other issue (and another reason I am so concrened) is that hubby will already be in Winston Salem until Saturday night. So he'll already be there and I am coming down to meet him at the airport Sunday morning with 4 kids and the luggage. He doesn't want me stressing out but this is the kind of thing that takes all the air out of my balloon. i'd rather call the whole thing off than to worry about this. I'll be up all night long Saturday night. UGH. (it was 70 yesterdy here I want that weather)

shelby, If you see this, please give a post back about what you have decided. I am sort of concerned by looking at the weather forecasts for tonight. I hope all goes well, and wish you and family a safe trip to a wonderful cruise.
