Hi, we're going on our honeymoon and will be taking the Celebrity Galaxy cruise (first time cruisers) on Oct. 6, 2007. We're pretty good at navigating on our own and don't mind walking at all, if it saves us a few hundred dollars on transfers. We'll be touring Itally on our own the week before the cruise sets sail and were thinking about just taking the train from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia. I've seen multiple postings that say it's only about a 15 minute walk and then once you arrive at the port you can take the Celebrity shuttle. Has anyone ever done this?
Also, we want to do that on the way back too. We'll need to go from Civitavecchia to FCO airport. Has anyone ever done this? Our cruise ship want $85 per person for the transfer from the ship to the airport and we think that's pretty expensive. Any thoughts?
at the airport, take the Leonardo da Vinci express to Rome. At Rome train station, enquire about train to Civitavecchia. train ride from Rome to port will be about 1.5 to 2 hours. At the port station, you can either take a taxi to the port entrance or you can lug your luggage for about a kilometre. At the port entrance, there will be regular free shuttle bus to take you to the ship. make sure you are on the right shuttle in case there are more than 1 cruise ship in port on that day. Good luck and have fun. We were there in November 06 and it was wonderful on the Galaxy.
Bottom arrow is train station, middle arrow is port entrance, top arrow is where the ships are. Ten minute walk to port and shuttle to ship. Couldn't be easier.

Just a warning - if using the train between Rome and Civitavecchia - watch your luggage - don't use the overhead racks at all. Not only did I read a post about someone having their backpack stolen last year, we actually saw it happen to someone on the train while we were on it two weeks ago. In the confusion of passengers getting on at one stop, the thief dropped a couple of coins on the floor and while everyone looked at them, he grabbed the backpack from the overhear rack and casually walked off the train. The victims had no time to react before the train had started to move.
(1) Go first class, it's not that much more. More room and less crowded for luggage. (2) Use a bicycle cable lock to tie all of your bags together. (not my idea but I just bought one for our June trip.) (3) Keep your eye on your luggage at all times! (4) Enjoy your trip!
