we're in juneau on September 2 for from 7am until 7pm. We have a whale watching trip at 1:15 until 4:30. What should we do in the morning? Do we have time to go to Mendenhall glacier? Has anyone been to any of the dog sledding camps? Any recommendations for where they are and are they worth it? Thanks!!

Take the Tram ride to the Top of Mt Roberts. The views are great.

Our helicopter trip took about 2 hours of our time (1 hour flying time)so you could do that in the AM and still make the whale trip in PM. We did not do whale watching in July, but those who did raved about it as it was a lot more than just watching them swim, which you get exposed to on the ship if you are on the bow at the right time.

Don't miss Mendenhall Glacier. You can easily do it in the time you have. our excursion took a total of 2.5 hours which left about 90 minutes in the park and one hour for transport back and forth. The glacier is beautiful and well presented. lots of vantage points to see from. neat waterfall nearby off to the right. and trails before you get there where you can see salmon and possibly bears.

Hello,

Take a walk around downtown Juneau and see the State Capitol. You will then understand how laid back Alaska is compared to other places.

If you can do do, see the Auke Bay section of Juneau and especially the Shrine to Saint Theresa (or another saint). This is an especially interesting and very moving church and property that is in Auke Bay.

Hope that this helps.

Hi Chico,

We did the ERA helicopter glacier/dogsled tour in June. It was amazing. You fly over about four glaciers and then land on a dogsled camp where you ride a dogsled for about 45 minutes. You can actually be one of the mushers if you want. It is a fantastic tour that I would recommend to anyone. If you want to see some pictures, let me know.

Have a great trip and enjoy Alaska!

RE: Red Dog Saloon

I was a bit disappointed in it. Pretty small, very crowded, poor service, expensive drink prices. I think it is living on it's rep too much for too long.

That's too bad; when we went a couple years ago, it was way crowded, lots of fun, excellent service, and the servers were having a ball, too. Maybe the crowd on your day was full of Ugly Canadiens? (Since Alaska is in US, can there be ugly Americans?) Don't get up in arms, Maple Leafs, it's a spoof.

Red Dog Saloon is a place to say you've been..but the Mendenhall Glacier is something to talk about for years to come...I've been to both....I don't talk too much about the Saloon..Alaska is wonderful, Enjoy...
