I've read about the ship being dingy and dirty. I am not concerned about a few dings-I do know the ship is "old" by cruise ship standards. BUT Clean is important to me. I've also read about a smell that is not pleasant???

Sovereign is an older ship, but it is clean.

It does have a spa. The cost of the spa treaments are comparable to those at your neighborhood spa, but they do usually run specials onboard. It does not cost you a thing to use the gym facility.
