I want extra of that appetizer with the creamy rice, blackened corn and bay scallops. Maybe someone can get me two of those and I will give them my extra lobster in trade.

More than once I've had an appetizer that would make a great entree. I forget the name of the one with the rice, corn, and scallops, but I love it too.

I had a good appetizer on the NCL Sky this past weekend. It was scallops with asparagus. The scallops weren't much bigger than my little finger, but they were good!

Penny and I saw a lot of lobsters in the aquarium tank at the Atlantis. Smile

I know i'm not a lobster expert, but on our cruise the lobster was good, but it didn't taste a bit more special than a shrimp! What I liked was the vidalia onion tart as an appetizer. And the baked alaska that everyone made a big deal over wasn't anything special either, but maybe i'm just weird? Big Grin

I think too much is made of the Baked Alaska too. All it is is ice cream with a meringue. The parade with it used to be a cruise fixture but they have scaled that back over the years. First the flames had to go and on the Liberty last year the parade was gone too. They just served it as a dessert choice. In fact, they didn't serve it on my last two RCI cruises so maybe it is going away too.

A few nights on the cruise I could usually order 3-4 appetizers and skip and main dish--no reflection on the selection at all-- I just love any seafood ap, the onion tart, those cold, fruit flavored soups I think are to die for, there was a hot spinach dip with nachos, french onion soup, and then the creamy basmati rice with scallops. I am well satisfied before the dinner shows up. Maybe that is why some people are less impressed with the food: they expect the lobster to knock their socks off and they are already nearly full!

I've become a big fan of the chilled soups ever since f-mattox urged me to try them. Very refreshing. I know some items on the menus have a note that they can be had as either an appetizer or an entree, which I guess means a larger portion is available. I've never done that. Maybe I need to be less regimented in my ordering.

I have not been on a cruise in a little over a year and a half but looking forward to my October cruise. I would be crushed to find ouit I was limited to one lobster. I love lobster night and I do order at least two. Why not? The cruiseline buys enough food for the week and lobster is only served one night. I don't recall lobster bisque on the menu (maybe they have it now0 or other lobster dishes. What do they do with the other lobsters...throw them out? I sure hope not.
The only time we were cut off was on a three day cruise to nowhere on RC after Hurricane Lily hit several years back. Never have been cut off on Carnival.

Unless you're on a Canada/New England cruise, chances are the lobster tails you're getting arrived to the ship frozen. I don't know how long any leftovers last.

I admit to being a lobster snob...I live in New England and we crack them with our hands. That wouldn't go over well in a formal dining room. Smile

I've always felt that lobster is best served in a casual atmosphere. A roast on a beach or a boil with newspapers laid down on the table. It is more fun that way too.

Dave, those are indeed the best places to enjoy lobster. Now I want some.

I do order lobster occasionally on ships. It's pretty much hit or miss. Yet, I wouldn't want to see it eliminated as it is a highlight for many.

Helloo

Where do I find that there is a steak surcharge? I have yet to read of this, and this is my first time hearing of it? Is it 15.00 for each person???
Can you also tell me what ships have lobster? We will be sailing on Independence in December.
Thanks
Darcie and Dennis

RCI is testing an extra-fee steak in the main dining room on the Freedom Of The Seas, and on the Majesty Of The Seas. On the Freedom it is the only steak alternative, and it costs $14.95. So yes, it is per person if they each want steak. On the Majesty you can still get a steak for no extra charge or you can buy the "nicer" one.

Other than that, menus are pretty much standardized across the fleet. As the subject of this thread indicates, RCI is in the process of eliminating lobster. I wouldn't expect to see it on the Independence or any other ship in the near future.

So, let me get this straight... I worked for years to become a diamond member and they want to reward my efforts by eliminating the one meal that I enjoy above all others. Thanks RCL. I have been wanting to attain diamond+ but I am suddenly drawn to other pursuits now.

Actually after looking around the internet this morning, I am not sure if they are eliminating it or not, but reports earlier this year said they were because of some world wide lobster shortage. Since then it seems hit and miss. Some ships didn't have it, some did, and some still do serve it. I'm not sure what the real story is. Perhaps it depends on the cruise length.

I really think it's a crayfish shortage.
