could anyone please inform my partner as she is adament she is taking our travel iron is this wise, and also what would happen if they were to find it.
irons are prohibited for good reason as they are a major fire hazard onboard a ship. Fire is a much more serious thing at sea than at home. It must be considered grossly negligent to take and use a travel iron despite this significant danger. A passenger died earlier this year on the "Star Princess" after a fire broke out in a passenger space, and the damage to the ship was reportedly in the range of US$ 40 million.
Taking a portable steamer is an excellent and so much safer alternative!
Yes the portable steamers are great. If you really need something pressed and the steamer is not good enough they do have a service ($$$$) that you can pay for and they do a great job.
I also have a portable steamer, but it´s about 1 pound in weight.
And the service onboard is not that expensive, we try to give them our clothes, which need a dry cleaning, its much less expensive than here on land and we come home with some clean clothes. You can find some price-examples on our website: www.oppermann-wuppertal.de when you look at the US version of the Radiance Hawaii review, you´ll find different prices.
Chris, a pound is nothing compared to an iron. I'd take the steamer if you have one. I you have an item of clothing that just needs a couple of wrinkles taken out, it only takes a few seconds. I'd rather take one along and not need it, then to need it and not have it along.
I was not refering that it would cost you alot for a garment or 2 but that if you want to have them pressed on the ship it would simply cost some money. The amount depends on how much you have done. I just pack with care and do not normally need my things pressed.
If you forget to take the steamer, when you take your shower place the garments in the room with you, the steam will take the wrinkles out normally. Also most ships now supply a hair dryer. If you use the steam in the shower use the dryer to finish it off.
I have always taken a small travel iron on cruises. No one has ever said anything to me about it. But oddly enough, I never seem to use it. I realize it probably could be a fire hazard, so next time I think I'll just leave it at home.
i have found if you place clothes that will wrinkle easly in the bags(covers) from the dry cleaners, they will not wrinkle as easly. it lets the clothes slide easier. besides you are on vacation with other people with wrinkled clothes.
