The train is cheaper. Maybe you go by train to Sorrento, from there to Capri with the hydrofoil and at least by boat back to Naples. Regards Uwe
(if I have time this weekend I will check it for you)
Thank you so much Uwe. Would you recommend doing Capri first and Sorrento on the way back or stopping at Sorrento first. In case we take the train to Sorrento from Naples, how far is Naples cruise port from the railway station. Time is a factor you know! Thanks again for taking the trouble.
You can reach Capri by ferry or hydrofoil from either Naples or Sorrento. Transportation from Naples is available at the Molo Beverello (near to the cruise terminal); here is a greater frequency of departures and larger selection of ferries and hydrofoils. From Naples, the ferry takes about 80 minutes and costs 4,54 EUR (less than 5.00 USD). The hydrofoil takes about 40 minutes and costs about 14,00 EUR. From Sorrento, the ferry takes about 40 minutes and costs 5,68 EUR, while the hydrofoil takes about 20 minutes and costs 8,50 EUR. There will also be a small fee for each sizeable baggage item brought on board. The baggage fee is paid at the time of ticket purchase, and you will be given a special ticket for each bag.
The schedule changes frequently; call the individual companies or the tourist office for more accurate times.
Here is the timetable Capri-Naples (Beverello):

The Voyager of the Seas will be at Naples at 07:00AM on August 7th and will leave Napoli at 07:00 PM. Yo may take a taxi to Piazza Garibaldi (Main Rail Station.) It takes about 15 minutes. If you can go aboard the Voyager at 8 h AM or so, you can take the Circumvesuviana train , starting in Naples at 09:09 AM. Arrival in Sorrento will be at 10:17 AM. (The train before starts at 08:11h AM at Naples; arrival at Sorrento 09:03 AM) Take the hydrofoil from Sorrento to Capri at 12.50 (noon) , 01:15 PM or 01:50 PM. Leave Capri with the hydrofoil at 5:10PM; so you will be at Naples Beverello ab about 6 PM. But beware that all ferry and hydrofoil times may change. Regards Uwe

Just back from the Grand Princess Greek Isles Cruise. Finally made it over to Capri What a beautiful island. The lines for the hydofoil are quite long. Be sure to give your self time. Same with the finiculars on Capri.
Check out my webshots link below to see some photos. I have 2 albums posted from the cruise.
I understand there is a new ferry Metro del Mare that has direct service to Pompei and Sorrento. Anyone know about this or where their Naples dock is located? Thanks
Uwe, your info on this topic are very usefull. We are planning on doing the same in September. Our ship will be in Naples from 8:00 Am to 8:00 PM. We were thinking on doing the ferry or hydrafoil from Naples to Capri or Anacapri, then ferry to Sorrento and train back to Naples. We might skip Sorrento and go back to Naples to see the city. What do you suggest ? Also should we go to Capri or Anacapri ? Do you think we will have a chance to see the Blue Grotto ? Thank you very much for your answer.
Hi janobu, Take the ferry / hydrofoil (h. is faster) from Naples Porto Beverello (next to the cruise center; left side) to Capri. The port there is on the north coast. Link to the map: http://www.premier.net/~Italy/capmap.htm Another useful link: http://www.travelplan.it/capri_guide_getting_there.htm and: http://www.concierge.com/destination/capri/map From the Marina Grande you can catch a boat for the blue grotto. They start all the time. In front of the lagoon you have to change the bigger boat for a smaller one. Beware of seasickness. All in all you have to spend about two and a half or three hours for that tour. (Maybe in september there are not so many tourits as in june, july or august; so you could do this in two hours.) Than take the funicolar to upper Capri for a short walk. Go back to the port for Naples. I suggest to see a little bit of the ancient town of Naples. Sorrento? For me it ist not a must. Anacapri is in the middst of the isle oc Capri. Forget it, if you have not plenty of time. Regards Uwe
Uwe, thank you so much for your fast reply. How do you suggest we come back to Naples ? By train or ferry (hydrofoil) ? If we take the train, do we get to see the view of the coast everyone is talking about ? Best regards, Jan
Hi Jan, if you want to go to Sorrento, the train back to Naples is cheaper than the hydrofoil (and a little bit faster). But: you need about 15 minutes from the piazza Garibaldi (Main train station) to the port. I suggest to get back by ship. Riding by train you will not see much of the coast. Regards Uwe
