First, we have never been to Rome but will be there in June for four days prior to our cruise. This site has been immensely helpful. Just type in Rome or some such in the "find" category. We are staying in a hotel and can walk to the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Coloseum, Piazza Navorno. You can also get an off-on bus to many of these places. We're going to see sites in the a.m. and take time to smell the roses in the afternoon by selecting a plaza, sipping wine & people watching. Hank, on this site, is very helpful. We've taken his advice on a lot of what we're doing. Hope this is of some help. We also bought a couple of tour books of Rome & Italy. They, too, are helpful. Arrivederci.
You will probably see the most by using the hop on hop off tour but remember Rome is busy all year round and if there is something really special you would like to see plan for queues

Moeve I hate to sound stupid but I don't understand what "plan for queues" means. Thanks again, Sandy p

Sandy, If Moeve is speaking the Queen's English, "queues" means "lines". Moeve is saying to be prepared to spend a lot of time in lines for special attractions (I think).

A good map of Rome is essential if you want to find your way around. You can see the Vatican, St. Angelos castle, Campa del Fiori, the Pantheon, the Trevi fountain, and the Spanish steps in a relatively short walk if you follow the correct route. If you want to see the inside of the Sistine Chapel, my advide would be to arrive very early as the line can easily wrap around two blocks very quickly.

Excellent advice.
The Vatican museums were not (thankfully) on our absolutely-positively-must-see list. St. Peter's Basilica and the Scavi (excavation) tour were. On our first (full) day in Rome, we got to the Vatican fairly early (before 8:30 a.m.) and there was NO line to enter the Basilica. We were able to take our time and see and appreciate everything without waiting for others to make a little room, or worry about holding someone else up. By the time we were finished it was time to pick up our Scavi Tour tickets for our 9:15 a.m. tour. By the time THAT was over and we re-entered the square, the line to enter the Basilica was really lo-o-o-o-o-ong.

On a side note, if you are an art lover, make sure that you go into st. peters basilica to view the Pieta. And you would not complete a trip to Rome without viewing The Origin Of Man on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. (word of caution here. Don't speak but in a whisper and, under no circumstances do you try to photograph the ceiling or you will be escorted to the nearest exit) Finally, if you want to see a beautiful art museum, go to the Borghese. You have to have reservations to go inside. You can purchase them and print them out on the internet.
